Learn by developing a problem-solving mindset: practice a range of problem-solving strategies such as working backward, drawing diagrams, using algebraic manipulation, and breaking problems into smaller parts. Learn which strategies to use of which type range of question (NCEA creates multiple tricky scenarios).
Use Correct Notation and Terminology: The conventional mathematics notation differs across school curriculums. Learn and familiarise with the specific NCEA notation and terminology
Unlike other curriculums, NCEA maths exams don’t provide a full formula Sheet (i.e., it don’t include all the useful equations): Memorise a personalised formula sheet that includes all the key formulas, theorems, and definitions.
Understand the Marking Criteria: Familiarise yourself with the marking criteria for each question. Especially on how the achievement, merit, and excellence question marking can affect your final score. Also pay attention to the specific requirement of showing clear working. (However, note that NCEA is not very “picky“ on simplifying your final numerical answer.)
Practice Time-Constrained Exams: Simulate exam conditions by setting a timer and practicing solving past papers or sample questions within the allocated time. This will help you develop speed and accuracy in answering questions under pressure.
Stay Calm and Confident: On the exam day, remain calm and confident. Manage exam anxiety through deep breathing exercises and positive self-talk. Some pressure is good for performance, but don’t stress too much!
